9 honored with ADEA William J. Gies awards

Individuals and organizations from across the U.S. were recognized March 14 in San Diego with the ADEAGies Foundation's annual awards for upholding the highest standards of dental education.

Named after William J. Gies, a pioneer in dental education, the William J. Gies Awards for Vision, Innovation, and Achievement were presented at a celebration in conjunction with the 2011 American Dental Education Association (ADEA) annual meeting.

The 2011 honorees were selected by the ADEAGies Foundation Board of Trustees. Below are this year's winners:

  • American College of Dentists, Gies Awards for Achievement-Public or Private Partner
  • California Dental Association, Gies Awards for Vision-Private or Public Partner
  • Center for Women's Health at Trover Health Systems, Gies Awards for Innovation-Private Partner
  • Caswell A. Evans Jr., DDS, MPH, Gies Awards for Achievement-Dental Educator
  • Michelle Henshaw, DDS, MPH, Gies Awards for Innovation-Dental Educator
  • J. Bernard Machen, DDS, PhD, Gies Awards for Vision-Dental Educator
  • Diarmuid Shanley, BDS, MScD, Gies Awards for Achievement-Dental Educator
  • Tufts University School of Dental Medicine, Gies Awards for Achievement-Academic Dental Institution
  • University of the Pacific Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry, Gies Awards for Vision-Academic Dental Institution

"It's no mistake that the award winners span individuals, nonprofit organizations, and higher education institutions. The innovations of all these segments are vital to the future of oral health and dental education," said Richard Valachovic, DMD, MPH, president of the ADEAGies Foundation and executive director of ADEA.
