Do's and don'ts for staff training: Build the best team possible

Taking the time to train your team is an essential part of ensuring practice success. You can increase efficiency, reduce stress, and build camaraderie by clearing your practice schedule for a day of staff training.

Do

Train outside the office. Training can't always be accomplished in the office. Teams should attend seminars that provide appropriate training based on each staff member's duties and responsibilities. The more you learn, the more successful you can be in your job. When the right training opportunity occurs, get away from the office and enrich your skills.

Don

Don't criticize. When providing feedback, don't chide the team member, but rather focus on how the employee, office, and doctor can all do a better job of working together. With this approach, the emphasis is on how to build a more effective team and practice rather than shining a light on individual shortcomings.

Roger P. Levin, DDS, is the founder and CEO of Levin Group, the leading dental practice consulting firm in North America. For the complete list of dates and locations where you can attend his latest seminar, visit www.levingroup.com/gpseminars.
