In every community, there are problems that the citizens, government agencies, and institutions can't solve by themselves. If your community's giving you and your staff livelihoods, give something back (in addition to the excellent dental care you provide!). Find an important issue that needs more attention and resources, and make it your own.
Use social media to publicize your community work -- and to get others involved. Facebook and other social media sites are perfect for getting the word out about your community activities. Announce upcoming events, put out calls for volunteers, educate the public about the problem being addressed, and challenge other businesses to join you in support of a good cause. Your practice will soon be known for its good citizenship.
Don't make a half-hearted commitment. Unless your outreach program is based on selecting a new cause every year -- which could include a public "contest" to decide next year's focus -- stick with your chosen cause. Publicity and goodwill in the community may not be prime objectives of your public service, but they will be greater if you become known as a steadfast supporter of an important activity.
