IDS notebook: Ivoclar Vivadent sit-down, plus a few new products to know

COLOGNE, Germany - As is customary before every recent International Dental Show (IDS) begins, Ivoclar Vivadent held a premeeting press conference to not only show off some of their latest products but also to talk about the state of dentistry around the world.

On the product side, Ivoclar is unveiling Tetric plus, a new simplified composite specially designed to set new standards in universal composites, according to the company. Tetric plus takes its name from the Greek prefix "tetra," meaning "four," and this number is central to its key product features. It incorporates four essential elements: four shades, 4-mm layer thicknesses, four-quadrant applicability, and an optimized four-filler technology.

Mirco Stiehle, chief commercial officer of Ivoclar, told me in an exclusive interview that they are looking at the success of this product and others from a global standpoint when it comes to efficiency.

"The question will be, if you have four shades right now as you talk, will that be, for example, the blockbuster in Brazil? That is to be seen," Stiehle said, referring to Brazil's cosmetic-dentistry focus. "However, if you look at things such as efficiency, simplicity, training staff, and onboarding, I do believe that that's a game changer."

Also among Ivoclar's announcements on Monday, March 24, was a worldwide strategic alignment that would "elevate" the company's prevention and care portfolio. Among the products falling under this category are VivaDent Protecting Mouthwash, VivaDent Fluoridation Gel, VivaDent Protecting Gel, and VivaDent Polishing Paste.

"These and all other products in the prevention and care range are designed to ease the daily workload of prophylactic care teams and support lasting improvements in patients' oral health," Ivoclar said in a press release.

During Monday's press conference, efficiency was a focal point of many of the discussions. Also a point was a focus on workflows, not only of the digital variety, but also ensuring that practitioners understood a workflow that could be used with the company's line of products.

"I think that's going to be interesting, where the efficiency comes in," Stiehle said of the company's focus on product workflow. "Which of the companies in our industry provide the full workflow under one roof? That's the difference for Ivoclar. There are other players that have a workflow, but is it original? At Ivoclar, everything is original. I think that's the main point. Everything goes hand in hand."
