Gwen Hlava, RDH, MS, professor and chair of the dental hygiene department at the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) College of Dentistry, has retired after 50 years.
Under her leadership, the dental hygiene program gained U.S. recognition, ranking first in 2006 among 256 programs, according to the university.
Hlava received numerous awards, including multiple outstanding teacher awards, the Outstanding Educator Award from UNMC College of Dentistry Alumni Association, and Dental Hygienist of the Year from the Nebraska Dental Hygienists' Association.
