One of the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) has awarded a five-year, $1.9 million grant to a New York University (NYU) College of Dentistry professor to study tissue damage during stroke and heart attack.
The National Institute of General Medical Sciences awarded the grant to Evgeny Pavlov, PhD, an associate professor of molecular pathology at the dental school. Pavlov's research is focused on mitochondrial permeability transition, a sudden, stress-induced change to mitochondria that can be caused by a wide range of diseases.
The grant will fund a study to measure mitochondrial permeability transition and tissue damage at various levels. Pavlov hopes the research can lay the groundwork for developing drugs to protect against tissue damage from a stroke or heart attack, according to the university.
