Univ. of Louisville dental school receives $5M gift

The University of Louisville (UofL) School of Dentistry has received a $5 million gift to create an endowed fund to meet future priorities.

Wayne Mortenson, DMD, and his wife, Sue, have committed to a planned gift of $5 million, which is the largest philanthropic gift in the history of the dental school, according to the university.

After earning his UofL dental degree in 1979, Dr. Mortenson began a successful career with a practice in Louisville, since expanded to multiple locations in Kentucky and Indiana with partner practices in five other states.

"We are so grateful to the Mortensons who have given generously to UofL over the years," stated James Ramsey, UofL president, in a press release. "They have a vision to ensure future generations of dentists receive a top-notch education in state-of-the-art facilities."

The dental school recently completed a $48-million building renovation, increased first-year class enrollment to 120 (from more than 3,000 annual applicants), and established a new pediatric dentistry clinic at Kosair Charities, Ramsey noted.
