Week in Review: Ex-NBA players charged for fraud | How to have it all | Highlights from SmileCon

Dear DrBicuspid Member,

More than a dozen former professional basketball players have been charged in an alleged scheme to defraud the National Basketball Association's (NBA) benefits plan. Our top story of the week provided the details.

The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York claimed the players submitted $4 million in claims for dental and medical treatment they never received, including obtaining fraudulent invoices from a dentist affiliated with offices in Beverly Hills, CA. The defendants include Terrence Williams, a former New Jersey Nets player, and Shannon Brown, formerly a guard with the Los Angeles Lakers team that won the 2009 NBA championship.

Highlights from SmileCon

The ADA spent the past two years reimagining its annual meeting from the ground up. The result was SmileCon, a lively and invigorating three-day event filled with education, products, and interactive experiences.

Our editorial team covered the meeting both in person and remotely. One of the top stories from the show addressed how dentists can have it all. In his presentation, NextLevel Practice CEO Gary Kadi said that working more to have more is a myth, and that technology and shortcuts can free up time for enjoyable life experiences.

Changing aspirin recommendations?

Last but not least, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force has proposed changing the guidance around low-dose, daily aspirin to prevent cardiovascular disease. Pharmacologist Tom Viola, RPh, discussed what you need to know about aspirin's benefits and risks in a special episode of Dental Dose shot live at SmileCon.
