Dentists, orthodontists are among best-paying jobs of 2014

Orthodontists and dentists are among the top five best-paying jobs in the U.S. this year, according to a new ranking by CareerCast.

Topping the list are surgeons, with average annual incomes of $233,150, according to CareerCast, which gathered data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, trade associations, and its own jobs report. Orthodontists came in fourth, with annual average salaries of $149,310; dentists were next, with average incomes of $146,340. And both professions are projected to grow 16% by 2022.

The 10 best-paying jobs, including annual average salaries and projected growth by 2022, as ranked by CareerCast:

  1. Surgeon: $233,150; 18% growth
  2. Physician (general practice): $187,200; 18% growth
  3. Psychiatrist: $178,950; 18% growth
  4. Orthodontist: $149,310; 16% growth
  5. Dentist: $146,340; 16% growth
  6. Petroleum Engineer: $130,280; 26% growth
  7. Air traffic controller: $122,530; 1% growth
  8. Pharmacist: $116,670; 14% growth
  9. Podiatrist: $116,440; 23% growth
  10. Attorney: $113,530; 10% growth
