A Fort Wayne, IN, dentist has won the USA Cycling Masters Road Nationals bike race for the second straight year.
Gary Painter, DDS, 57, broke the 29 mph barrier this year, clocking 29.4 mph during his time trial at the national championship, according to a news-sentinel.com story. Dr. Painter won at a pace nearly a minute faster than he did in 2012.
To compete in the masters championship, cyclists must be at least 35 years old. Riders compete in five-year age brackets, starting at 35 to 40. The rules are different than some other races, as no drafting is allowed and riders start in 30-second intervals. The riders compete in time trials, road races, and criterium races.
After winning two consecutive masters championships, Dr. Painter participated in the World Championship this fall in Italy and is invited back to race in 2014 World Championship in Slovenia.
Dr. Painter's practice is in a renovated barn, which includes a state-of-the-art operatory on one floor and a high-tech bike training room in the basement that uses computrainers to make up for time off the road in the winter.
Dr. Painter is also a member of the Fort Wayne Outfitters racing team, which uses his training facilities.
