Christensen: Time to add implants to your practice; firing a patient; and independent hygienists

Dear DrBicuspid Member,

At the Greater New York Dental Meeting, Dr. Gordon Christensen urged dentists to add dental implants to their repertoire.

"Every person in this room that's not afraid of blood should be able to place an implant in a healthy person with healthy bone," he said during a Monday morning session in which he shared his thoughts on techniques and materials for replacing a single tooth. Read more of what he said here.

There are now more than 800 dental hygienists in Canada in independent practice. They enjoy the autonomy but also warn of the financial difficulties of starting a business from scratch, which are compounded by the fact that they don't get referrals from dentists. Contributing writer Rosemary Frei investigates what it takes for these hygienists to make it on their own there. Find out more here.

Tom Paumier, DDS, advises dentists to increase their peace of mind by taking a simple step here.

In her latest Sheri's Solutions column, Dr. Sheri Doniger answers the question, "Have you ever 'fired' a patient?" Her experience from her practice of just such a time makes for thoughtful reading here.
