Who embezzles, and why? And, Stan Brock, dental hero

Dear DrBicuspid Member,

Sometimes it's a spouse, girlfriend, relative, accountant, or business partner. Unfortunately, more often it's a trusted, longtime employee who has an insider's knowledge of your bookkeeping practices and access to your bank account.

Dental practice embezzlement is not an anomaly; in fact, it's shockingly pervasive. Some fraud investigators say that 60% of dentists will be victims of fraud during their careers, while others put the figure as high as 90%. In part 1 of a new two-part series, Associate Editor Donna Domino looks at who typically embezzles from a dental practice and why.

In clinical news, while some antibiotics have been found to be a beneficial adjunct during the treatment of periodontal disease, the jury is still out on azithromycin, according to a study in the Journal of Clinical Periodontology. And prosthodontic treatment can improve patients' overall health and enhance their lives in the process, according to a study in the Journal of Dentistry.

Finally, we're excited to introduce a new feature series, Dental Heroes, designed to pay tribute to individuals in dentistry who go above and beyond the call of duty. First up: Stan Brock, founder and charismatic leader of Remote Area Medical.
