Ark. dental students, patients benefit from big donations

The Delta Dental of Arkansas Foundation has donated $500,000 to the University of Tennessee Health Science Center College of Dentistry to accommodate 10 additional Arkansas dental students. The money will also be used to expand the college's preclinical laboratory, according to the company.

The number of dental school openings for Arkansas students will increase from 23 to 33 students per class starting in the fall.

In related news, the Arkansas Mission of Mercy (ArMOM) received a $248,100 grant from the Wal-Mart Foundation to support ArMOM's fifth annual dental clinic, which offers free dental care to needy Arkansans.

The clinic will be held May 20-21 at the Statehouse Convention Center in Little Rock and will offer extractions, fillings, oral hygiene instruction, and other services not offered previously, according to ArMOM.
