NC insurance company sues state over dental contract

A North Carolina insurance company that had been providing state and local government retirees with vision and dental coverage for nearly 10 years has sued the state for awarding that contract to another company that won it in bidding earlier this month, according to a news story on insurancenewsnet.com.

State Insurance Services lost the contract to Pierce Insurance earlier this month through a bidding process, the story noted.

State Insurance Services and a group of state retirees have filed a class-action lawsuit against the state, the North Carolina Department of State Treasurer, and State Treasurer Janet Cowell, alleging that the bidding process was flawed.

According to court documents, State Insurance Services also alleges that the state should not have taken bids because the company has a valid contract through 2012.
