NIH grant to fund study of ER dental care

A Marquette University researcher has received a $300,000 grant from the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) to study how hospital emergency rooms (ER) provide nontraumatic dental treatments.

Christopher Okunseri, BDS, MSc, an associate professor of dental public health, will use the money to identify which populations are seeking dental care in U.S. emergency departments. He will also explore which medications are being prescribed for nontraumatic dental conditions, such as cavities or bleeding gums, and whether racial and ethnic disparities exist in prescribing practices.

Dr. Okunseri's findings could help public health professionals and policymakers develop national medication guidelines for nontraumatic dental visits to the ER, according to the university.
