Bill Cosby retires famous dentist comedy bit

Veteran comic Bill Cosby has decided to retire his 32-year-old routine about a terrifying trip to the dentist, according to an interview in the Burlington Free Press.

"Dentists tell you not to pick your teeth with any sharp metal object," said Cosby in his 1983 comedy special, "Himself." Then in a pace that is quintessentially Cosby he continued, "Then you sit in their chair ... and the first thing they grab is an iron hook."

"The Dentist" holds the record for being used by the 73-year-old over a longer period of time than any of his other comedy routines, including well-known bits like "Fat Albert" and "Noah." He credits its longevity to the simple fact that it "always brings the house down" when he needs a good closer.

But some of the technology and methods he references in "The Dentist" have become outdated, he noted, prompting him to opt to use a different routine to close out his stand-up comedy performances.
