Dental researcher gets $1M grant for tissue regeneration

The Qatar National Research Fund (QNRF) has awarded Tarek El-Bialy, B.D.S., M.Sc., Ph.D., an associate professor of orthodontics and biomedical engineering at the University of Alberta, a three-year, $1.04 million (U.S.) grant to support Dr. El-Bialy's tissue-engineering research.

Dr. El-Bialy's research project, Using Pluripotent Gingival Cells and Ultrasound for Dental/Periodontal Tissue Engineering, uses the subject's own oral tissue stem cells and ultrasound for dental and periodontal tissue engineering and repair.

His project is a joint venture between the University of Alberta's dentistry department and the Queen Dental Center in Doha, Qatar.

When the three years of preclinical studies are completed and results published, El-Bialy's next research goal is to start clinical trials with humans.
