AGD event offers free dental care to underserved

The Academy of General Dentistry (AGD) and the AGD Foundation will team up with the Louisiana State University (LSU) School of Dentistry to hold its first outreach project, Nation of Smiles, One Smile at a Time, July 8 in New Orleans.

Volunteer dentists, hygienists, and dental assistants from around the U.S. will provide more than 300 patients from local shelters, clinics, and charities free dental care. LSU dental students also will participate.

"The AGD is in the vibrant city of New Orleans for our annual meeting, and this is the first time we've developed an outreach project with the purpose of giving back to the community in which we are visiting," said AGD president David Halpern, D.M.D., in a press release. "It is an honor for our association to serve the underserved populations of New Orleans by providing the oral care that these individuals so desperately need."

This event is not open to the public because of its limited capacity; local community sources have identified patients in need of care prior to the event.
