35% of U.S. employers offer dental benefits

About 35% of U.S. businesses offer dental insurance, compared to 56% who offer medical insurance, according to a survey published in the Journal of the American Dental Association (June 2010, Vol. 141:6, pp. 700-711).

Of those companies that offered medical insurance, 63% also offered dental, wrote the researchers from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality and the University of Maryland, using 2006 data.

The survey found that larger, more established businesses were more likely than small businesses to offer dental insurance. Since the larger companies had more employees, 70% of all employees and 81% of all employees who were offered health insurance were offered dental insurance in 2006.

These factors appeared to influence rates of dental insurance by state. For example, in Vermont, where relatively few large companies are located, only 43% that offered medical insurance also offered dental insurance.
