Dentists must report HIPAA breaches by March 10

Dentists who are covered under HIPAA have until March 10 to notify the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services of any breaches of unsecured protected health information that occurred between September 23, 2009 -- when the Breach Notification Rule went into effect -- and December 31, 2009, according to an ADA News story.

In addition to annual notifications, dentists are required to report breaches involving 500 or more individuals without unreasonable delay and 60 calendar days at the latest after discovery of the breach, the story noted.
