An Alabama dentist has filed a lawsuit against Jefferson County after the County Commission approved an occupation tax that will apply to anyone who has to pay for a profesÂsional license -- including dentists, according to a news story in The Birmingham News.
These professionals are currently exempt under the current tax, which is set to expire at the end of the year, according to the story. The new 0.45% tax is set to go into effect Jan. 1, 2010.
It is unconstitutional for the County to tax him and other licensed professionals who fall into 11 occupation types, claims the lawsuit.
Lawyers are attempting to make this a class action lawsuit. The aim will be that licensed professionals like architects, lawyers, accountants, doctors, engineers, dentists and others would be exempt from paying the new tax, the story concluded.
