ADA Foundation awards student research

The work of young scientists was celebrated as three awards sponsored by the ADA Foundation were handed out at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in Reno, NV, according to an ADA News article.

The foundation sponsors the awards every year at the fair as a way of stimulating interest in oral health research and recognizing the work of young scientists, according to the article.

First prize went to David Christopher Evans, age 17, from Midvale, UT, who developed a local anesthetic that provides sustained release for over 30 hours, extending postoperative pain relief.

Second prize went to Catherine Yang Fan, age 17, of San Antonio who successfully produced a biomaterial with antimicrobial properties using silver nanoparticles. The third-place award went to Shannon Somer Stockton, age 15, of Orlando, FL, who tested the effectiveness of Tolfenamic acid in down-regulation of Sp proteins, resulting in the inhibition of cancer cell proliferation, according to the article.

The first-place award comes with a $2,000 cash prize, while the second- and third-place winners receive $1,000 and $500, respectively.
