Philadelphia may require amalgam waivers

The Philadelphia City Council unanimously approved a bill this week that would require dentists to give their patients brochures and have them sign waivers before they receive amalgam restorations, according to news reports.

Dubbed the dental disclosure bill, the legislation is designed to give patients choices and information about what types of fillings will be placed in their mouths, according to its supporters.

The bill was initially introduced in 2004, passed in 2007, and amended Thursday. It still needs health department approval before it can take effect.
