Tissue Regeneration Systems (TRS) has raised $4.6 million in venture capital funds to develop an implantable, resorbable scaffold to support weight-bearing stretches of bone in the face and mandible.
TRS, a start-up with offices in Kirkland, WA, and Ann Arbor, MI, has received financing from Venture Investors of Madison, WI, the University of Wisconsin, the University of Michigan, and a Michigan state venture capital matching fund, according to a story on Xconomy.com.
The company has raised about $7 million since its founding in 2008.
TRS plans to develop the material for craniomaxillofacial surgery, in the hope of providing an alternative to metal plates and bone grafts, in which surgeons harvest bone from the hip or the fibula and engraft it in the face or jaw, creating complications and multiple surgeries.
The company has run a series of large animal studies with its material, and it has submitted a pair of applications to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for approval.
