A 3-year-old girl in Hawaii suffered brain damage after she was allegedly given too much anesthesia during a root canal procedure by a dentist on Oahu.
Finley Boyle went into cardiac arrest and has been in a coma at the Kapi'olani Medical Center for Women and Children since December 3, after she was sedated for treatment by Lilly Geyer, DMD, a dentist at Island Dentistry for Children in Kailua, according to a hawaiinewsnow.com story.
The girl's mother, Ashley Boyle, said no one offered to allow her inside the room where the procedure was being done.
Boyle was in the waiting room and realized something terrible had happened when she saw emergency medical technicians arrive through a back door, according to the story.
Her lawyer, Richard Fried, said the girl was given too many sedatives and anesthesia and went into cardiac arrest, and they plan to sue Dr. Geyer.
Her parents said their daughter's brain was damaged when it was deprived of oxygen during the cardiac arrest. The girl's father, Evan Boyle, said an MRI showed that the girl suffered a lack of oxygen for at least five minutes.
Dr. Geyer could not be reached for comment.
