Perio Tray now has insurance code

The ADA has issued a new insurance code for the Perio Tray, made by Perio Protect, as a noninvasive treatment for periodontal disease.

The ADA's Code Maintenance Committee recently voted to add D5994 to the Code on Dental Procedures and Nomenclature (CDT), effective January 1, 2014. The code refers to a "periodontal medicament carrier with peripheral seal -- laboratory processed." For offices prescribing Perio Trays, the 2014 CDT Code will simplify office record keeping and insurance documentation.

As a prescription medical device, the Perio Tray is most often prescribed as a periodontal medicament carrier that places medication in the periodontal pocket to treat acute or chronic periodontal diseases, the company noted in a press release. Seals and extensions fabricated along the interior periphery of the Perio Tray prevent medication from leaking into the oral cavity and provide positive pressure to direct medication deep into the periodontal pocket (greater than 7 mm).

Five dental laboratories in the U.S. are registered by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to fabricate Perio Trays and have technicians who have been trained by Perio Protect to customize Perio Trays according to prescription.
