Week in Review: 6-month appointment rebuttal | Preventing patient conflict | COVID-19 and oral habits

Well, we've made it to November and to another weekend. That's certainly worth celebrating in my book.

As we enter into a season focused on family and things for which we are grateful, I have to say that I am thankful to have not only an amazing team here at DrBicuspid.com but also an incredible group of writers who lend their thoughts and talents to our offerings every week.

That includes our clinical editor, Dr. David Rice, who took on an extremely hot topic this week. After many of you reached out with comments about an overview of a study we published that questioned whether patients really need six-month preventive appointments, Dr. Rice gave his view on the study (as well as the backlash) from the dentist's perspective. I appreciated his candor and I think the point-counterpoint of these articles gave our readers a lot to consider.

The point-counterpoint articles and the debate in general reminded me that conflict can happen anywhere, including online and inside the dental practice. How can you reduce the opportunities for disagreements between you and your patients? Dr. Teresa Yang weighed in this week with some excellent ideas and suggestions based on her past experiences.

And, let's face it, part of the conflict can come when it's time for the patient to pay the bill. Ashley Bond tackled one of the most awkward questions you and your team are likely asked on a way-too-often basis: "Can I just be billed?" Bond shared some thoughts on how to answer the question, as well as how to keep it from ever being uttered.

On the clinical side this week, people who were living with at least one person who tested positive for COVID-19 and brushed their tongue daily were less likely to become infected by the novel coronavirus, according to a recent study. It seems like this is yet another reason for your patients to make sure their oral health regimen is as strong as ever.

Finally, Tom Viola, RPh, stopped by to share what has come about in recent weeks regarding the potential danger of taking ibuprofen during pregnancy. In a short podcast, Viola discussed some big changes and what you need to know if you're thinking about suggesting ibuprofen to your female patients or coworkers.
