Calif. dentist pleads guilty to UPS fraud scheme

A dentist based out of Sacramento, CA, has pleaded guilty to healthcare fraud, which is associated with a loss of up to a $1 million, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.

Beginning in late 2008 or early 2009, David M. Lewis, DMD, began pursuing United Parcel Service (UPS) employees as patients because their healthcare plan provided 100% coverage without an annual limit. Dr. Lewis performed unnecessary dental work, including root canals, and also made up false narratives and statements to justify the work, according to the Justice Department.

Dr. Lewis is scheduled to be sentenced on March 31, 2016. He faces a maximum of 10 years in prison and a fine of $250,000 or twice the gross loss or gain of the scheme.
