The Ortek-ECD electronic caries detector (ECD) for the early detection of cavities now has widespread availability, Ortek Therapeutics announced.
Dental professionals can use the diagnostic tool to detect cavities that are often not picked up by x-rays, according to the company. The detector was specifically designed to detect caries on the chewing surfaces of molars and premolars.
Ortek-ECD was cleared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2017 and is being used by hundreds of dentists throughout the U.S., Ortek said. The tool does not use ionizing radiation and allows dentists to detect cavities before they can severely damage teeth.
