Penn Dental Medicine said it will launch a postdoctoral training program in general dentistry aimed at educating dental residents in primary dental care for vulnerable and underserved patients.
This new Advanced Education in General Dentistry (AEGD) program will be supported by a five-year, $2.1 million grant from the Health Resources and Services Administration, according to Penn Dental Medicine. Dental residents in the AEGD program will likely be placed at two of the school's community-based sites: Penn Dental Medicine at Sayre or Penn Dental Medicine at Puentes de Salud.
In addition, residents will complete clinical dental care within the school's soon-to-open Care Center for Persons with Disabilities and in the school's clinical dental program for torture survivors, in partnership with Philadelphia's Nationalities Service Center. The first class is scheduled to begin in July 2021; four students are expected to be accepted each year.
