Practice team training can take many forms -- offsite classes, informal one-on-one sessions during the workday, role-playing during Monthly Business Reviews. One of the best ways to upgrade team skills is to hold a training day two to four times a year. Properly planned, with a detailed agenda and "fun" breaks for shared meals and group interaction, a training day will not only improve overall team performance but also heighten everyone's sense of belonging and purpose.
Work with the team to create an agenda. Involve the entire staff in planning your training day. Discuss possible topics, identify problems that training can solve, and ask for ideas about food, refreshments, and break activities. If you've introduced new technology in the practice, consider inviting a manufacturer's rep to train staff in using it properly.
Don't treat it as a one-time event. By scheduling training days at least twice a year -- preferably every quarter -- you will show your commitment to excellence and the professional development of all staff members. Also, by making it a productive and enjoyable event, you will be establishing a valued practice tradition
