A U.K. dentist who bilked the National Health Service (NHS) for more than 1.5 million pounds ($2.5 million) has been officially barred from practicing.
Joyce Trail has been suspended from practicing by the General Dental Council following an October 18 hearing of its Professional Conduct Committee. Unless Trail appeals the council's order within 28 days, her name will be erased from the U.K. Register of dental professionals, according to the hearing report.
The committee found that her actions brought the profession into disrepute, the council stated.
Trail has been serving a six-and-a-half year prison sentence since October 2012 for one of the largest collection of fraudulent claims in the NHS' history, according to an article in Express. She was also convicted of perverting the course of justice, which resulted in an additional six-month sentence.
Trail submitted some 7,000 false invoices for denture work that was never performed in her Handsworth, Birmingham, practice. Her claims totaled 1,556,744 pounds ($2,518,870) between April 2006 and March 2009. A previous investigation resulted in an order from the NHS to repay 327,000 pounds ($529,000) in claims in 2004.
Her daughter, Nyri Stirling, who worked at the practice, received a two-year sentence for her part in the scheme.
