McGill Univ. requests $5K fee hike from dentistry students

McGill University in Montreal has requested an additional $5,000 Canadian ($4,900 U.S.) in annual fees from Faculty of Dentistry students to pay for updated equipment and a new facility, according to a report from CBC News. Most of the department's equipment is from the 1980s, and changes are underway at Montreal General Hospital where the clinic currently rents its space. The department has until August 2014 to complete its relocation.

The move and new equipment are estimated to cost $19 million Canadian. Half of it has been funded by the government and university fundraising efforts that have, in part, tapped into its alumni network. Dentistry students will have an opportunity to vote on the fee increase during a referendum next year, the article noted.
