Most Wichita State dental residency grads leave Kan.

Of the seven dentists graduating from Wichita State University's (WSU) new dental residency program, only two have chosen to stay and practice in the state, according to a blog post on the Wichita Eagle.

This fact was revealed by WSU President Don Beggs, PhD, while answering questions from the state Senate Ways and Means Subcommittee on Higher Education.

Sen. Laura Kelly (D-Topeka) told Beggs that this outcome was a little disappointing since one of the key purposes of the state-supported program is to keep dentists in the state, especially in rural areas, according to the Eagle.

Beggs said the focus right now was on getting the program running and accredited.

Kansas currently has no dental schools.

"Our priority is to get started," he said. "We've got to show we can do this."
