Move beyond single-tooth treatment

For many practices, single-tooth treatment constitutes as much as 80% of patient appointments. A high volume of single-tooth dentistry is not the most efficient way to practice because most patients have multiple oral health needs -- not just one problem. Levin Group recommends that the actual percentage of single-tooth treatment should be only 55% to 60% of all patient appointments.

Present ideal treatment. To move beyond single-tooth treatment, dentists should provide every patient an annual, comprehensive five-phase exam consisting of the following evaluations:

  1. Periodontal
  2. Tooth-by-tooth
  3. Cosmetic
  4. Implant
  5. Occlusal

This approach addresses both a patient's immediate and long-term needs.

Don't focus solely on immediate needs. Successful practices take a long-term view of the patient's oral health. Most patients are potential candidates for any number of traditional and elective procedures, yet too many practices focus exclusively on the patient's current needs and treatment. Educating your patients about the full range of services offered by the practice can result in a significant increase in production and profitability.
