Sirona Dental Systems recently introduced a new attachable filter for the SIROInspect caries detection system.
Using this filter rather than diagnostic glasses, dentists can detect carious regions through a red fluorescence light, the company noted.
The attachable filter aligns on the narrow probe with a silicone ring. It is made of plastic and filters out light with wavelengths less than 500 nm. Just as with the diagnostic glasses, light with higher wavelengths remains visible when the tooth is exposed to violet light in the range of approximately 405 nm.
SIROInspect also features proprietary FACE (fluorescence-aided caries excavation) technology that utilizes the fluorescence properties of teeth. Healthy tooth tissue is distinguished by green fluorescence, whereas red fluorescence is emitted by porphyrins that are produced by caries bacteria in decaying hard tooth substance.
