The American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) is the latest organization to respond to a study published this week in the Journal of Dental Research (June 10, 2013)
The University of Michigan School of Dentistry study concluded that individual risk factors help to dictate the frequency of cleanings needed per year to help prevent the disease.
But the AAP is urging careful risk assessment during at least one dentist visit annually to determine which patients may benefit from additional treatment to prevent periodontal disease. The AAP recommends that all patients receive a comprehensive periodontal evaluation once a year to effectively screen and assess risk for disease, and guide preventive care.
