The ADA is accepting applications for the Give Kids A Smile (GKAS) Community Leadership Development Institute for those interested in learning how to initiate, expand, or enhance a GKAS program.
The 2013 Community Leadership Development Institute will be held October 23-26, 2013, in St. Louis. An estimated 650 underserved children will receive comprehensive care during the four-day program.
Eligible applicants can apply for funds to subsidize travel expenses associated with attending the GKAS institute, according to an ADA. As many as 10 travel grants will be awarded.
Eligible organizations include state and local dental societies of the ADA, as well as community-based organizations providing oral healthcare for underserved children during GKAS programs. Applicants must be U.S. residents.
Applicant criteria include the following:
- Candidates who demonstrate their commitment and ability to begin a new GKAS program or enhance an existing one.
- Candidates should have experience with managing/chairing an access-to-care event.
- Candidates should hold positions in their organization that allows them to implement lessons learned during the GKAS institute.
- Applicants do not have to be licensed dentists or hygienists.
Applicants will be asked to serve as a GKAS ambassador during the GKAS institute. The ambassadors will work during the event in various capacities depending on their particular interests and program goals. Duties could include being a clinic escort, working at the check-in/check-out process, sterilization area, photography, triage area, education area, and entertainment area.
