Women in Dentistry 2016: 1st day highlights

PARK CITY, UT - Rella and Dr. Gordon Christensen and Drs. Carol Gomez Summerhays, Sheri Doniger, Desirée Walker, and more highlighted the first day of DrBicuspid.com's 2016 Women in Dentistry conference, which included the presentation of an ADA Presidential Citation to Dr. Gordon Christensen.

In his captivating presentation on the morning of Friday, April 8, Gordon Christensen, DDS, MSD, PhD, spoke about the need to have goals in your life and your practice. An organization plan and a goal are necessary, he said.

Dr. Christensen also noted that women are "taking over dentistry, and it will be a blessing" for the profession.

Rella Christensen, RDH, PhD, asked attendees how they defined success during her presentation on Friday morning. She noted that we "all have the same 24 hours, but where we are not equal is how we use those 24 hours."

Sheri Doniger, DDS, spoke next and gave an interactive talk on team building and team leadership. She talked about the challenges faced in communicating with different age groups, whether as colleagues, patients, or team members.

Desirée Walker, DDS, gave an inspiring and powerful presentation on how she overcame challenges to fight for what she believes in: providing the best care for her patients in North Carolina's poorest county. Her trip from debilitating back and neck pain to American Ninja Warrior is only one part of her incredible story.

Empowerment coach René Johnson lit up the conference with her presentation in the afternoon. "Inspiring change is about you," Johnson said. "Your business is only going to be as good as you are in the inside."

ADA President Carol Gomez Summerhays, DDS, attributed her success to "mentors and to practice management consultants -- good ones," during her presentation on Friday afternoon. She emphasized the importance of finding mentors, personally and professionally.
