A new report highlights that improving the public's oral health requires understanding the specific needs and barriers faced by underserved populations.
The report, from the Center for Health Workforce Studies at the University at Albany in New York, emphasizes that oral health is essential for overall health, yet many New Yorkers struggle to access services.
Funded by the Schuyler Center for Analysis and Advocacy, the study found that 43% of New Yorkers reported significant barriers to dental care, such as finding a dentist who accepts their insurance, transportation issues, and financial constraints.
These barriers particularly impact racial and ethnic minorities, low-income groups, and rural residents, who also face challenges finding providers who accept Medicaid or offer necessary services, according to the report.
