Susan Gunn has spoken at dental meetings on the subject of ethics for years. However, as we head into 2025, Gunn is worried that dentistry is at a crossroads when it comes to ethics, both personally and professionally.
In our wide-ranging interview, Gunn and I discuss some of the current ethical issues in dentistry (including embezzlement) and what can be done to put our profession on a better path forward in 2025. One of the solutions, according to Gunn, is better leadership in the dental practice.
"Ethically, they need to set good examples," Gunn said of today's dentists. "For instance, I learned about ethics by watching my dad. I'm not sure I would have learned about ethics if it had been a different dad. I might have learned some bad things by watching my dad. But I learned by watching those that model to me. Your team members are not any different. You are modeling behavior to your team. You're creating a toxic environment or a nontoxic environment. It's your choice."
During our talk, Gunn discussed the critical importance of ethics in the dental industry. We discussed the current state of ethics, the role of leadership in fostering ethical practices, and the personal responsibility of dental professionals. Gunn emphasizes the need for ethical standards in hiring practices and team dynamics and her aspirations for improving ethics in dentistry moving forward.
