A Chicago dentist faces 2.5 years in federal prison after allegedly collecting $1.2 million in medical care loans for dental work he never performed.

On Tuesday, U.S. District Judge Edmond E. Chang sentenced Michael Egan of Orland Park, IL, after Egan pleaded guilty to one count of wire fraud, according to Fox 32 in Chicago.

Egan owned and operated a dental practice in Tinley Park. Egan allegedly submitted fraudulent applications to a lending company for medical care loans in 2015 and 2016 to finance certain patients' dental care. Occasionally, after a loan was approved, Egan purportedly requested an increased loan amount for additional dental work that he allegedly said was needed for patients.

Egan has paid a portion of the loaned money to the alleged dental patients as well as recruiters who originally identified the patients to apply for the loans.
