Study outlines effectiveness of ultrasonic osteotome

The Misonix BoneScalpel ultrasonic bone cutter (osteotome) offers a safe and efficient method to create precise cuts during the transection of bone during reconstructive surgery of the mandible and face, according to a study in the International Journal of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery (January 10, 2013).

Researchers from the department of oral and maxillofacial surgery at the Clinique de Esperance in Montegnee, Belgium, reported advantages of the device, including improved control, a largely bloodless operative field for improved visualization, precise osteotomies, significant reductions in the occurrence of nerve impairment, and significant reductions in bad bone splits that may require additional corrective surgery.

Roland Gilles, MD, DDS, and his fellow researchers performed more than 100 procedures -- including orthognathic, reconstructive, and oncologic surgeries -- with the ultrasonic blade of the BoneScalpel. They credited the BoneScalpel with better control over the osteotomy, significantly fewer bad splits, and reductions in nerve impairment, swelling, hematoma, operative time, and hospital stay.
