Orthogen gets patent for NanoGen bone graft technology

Orthogen has received a U.S. patent for its NanoGen bone graft technology.

Orthogen's nanotechnology-based bone graft product, NanoGen, is a nanocrystalline calcium sulfate material provided in granular form, according to the company. Once implanted in the body, it undergoes complete degradation and stimulates the body to form its own bone. Orthogen received U.S. Patent No. 8,586,074 for the technology.

Bone grafting is commonly performed in dental procedures to maintain support for an existing tooth or to build a bony area to place dental implants. Dental implants require the presence of robust bone structure in maxilla or mandible to ensure successful placement and effective performance in the long term.

NanoGen has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for clinical use. It can be used to regenerate bone for periodontal treatments such as infrabony defects, endodontic treatments such as apicoectomy, or oral surgical procedures such as socket grafting and sinus lifts, the company said. Bone growth can be observed by the dental professionals on radiographs or CT scans.
