AAO to keep eye on microplastics in clear aligners

Though the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) has no formal position on microplastics -- which can expose humans to chemicals that have been linked to cancer and other health issues -- possibly being released from clear aligners, it will monitor research about it.

Possible associations between microplastics in clear aligners and their health effects have been explored in the research, but there is not enough evidence to draw definitive conclusions at this time, according to a press release dated December 11 from the AAO.

To monitor these concerns, the AAO has put together a team of researchers to carefully review all available studies on the matter. An article about this connection published on November 19 in the Journal of the World Federation of Orthodontists triggered the creation of the team and review, according to the release.

"The AAO is dedicated to monitoring developments, supporting further investigation, and working toward a clearer understanding of any potential implications," the release states.

Furthermore, the association's board has asked the AAO Foundation Planning and Awards Review Committee to issue a call for additional research proposals, with the possibility of funding new research projects. The AAO acknowledged that orthodontic product manufacturers have made efforts to develop innovative and effective treatment options.

"At the same time, the AAO encourages the ongoing advancement of such products to ensure that patient well-being remains central to orthodontic care while striving for optimal treatment outcomes."
