Study finds opioids less effective after tooth extraction
March 24, 2020 -- Patients who took opioids for pain relief after tooth extraction reported higher levels of pain than patients who took other analgesics in a new study, published in JAMA Network Open. The findings suggest nonopioid analgesics should be the first-line pain relief for extractions.  Discuss
Dentist pleads guilty to diverting oxycodone for own use
March 18, 2020 -- A dentist in Wisconsin has admitted to writing a prescription for oxycodone to his dental hygienist and then having her divert the painkillers to him for his personal use, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Western District of Wisconsin.  Discuss

Dentist gets prison for illegal prescriptions, Medicare fraud
February 7, 2020 -- A dentist in Missouri was sentenced to 18 months in prison for making false statements to Medicare and illegally issuing prescriptions for narcotic opioid drugs without a legitimate medical purpose. The dentist provided about 14,000 units of antianxiety and opioid drugs to a woman he had a personal relationship with for more than 10 years.  Discuss
50% of opioids prescribed by dentists exceed recommendations
February 6, 2020 -- About half of opioid prescriptions written by dentists in the U.S. exceeded two-day supply recommendations identified in previous research, according to a new study published online February 3 in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine.  Discuss
Pa. oral surgeon to pay $150K to settle opioid mishandling case
January 6, 2020 -- An oral surgeon in Pennsylvania agreed to pay $150,000 to settle allegations that she mishandled opioids, diverting them from patients for personal use, which resulted in the clinician overdosing on one occasion, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.  Discuss

December 27, 2019 -- The Iowa Dental Board has suspended the license and the general anesthesia permit for an oral surgeon who allegedly diverted patients' opioids for his own personal use, according to a settlement agreement and final order.  Discuss

December 18, 2019 -- Michigan has filed a lawsuit against Cardinal Health, McKesson, AmerisourceBergen Drug, and Walgreens, alleging the four major opioid distributors are liable under the state's Drug Dealer Liability Act.  Discuss
Pitt commits to opioid-free pain management
November 21, 2019 -- The University of Pittsburgh (Pitt) School of Dental Medicine has established opioid-free pain management guidelines for most procedures performed at its clinics. It is the first educational institution in the U.S. to take such action, according to the school.
