Summary of presentation: Misuse of prescription pain medications is now the leading cause of injury and poisoning deaths in the United States. The excessive purchase costs of these medications force many users to seek less expensive opiates for their habits resulting in a rapid expansion of heroin usage impacting all facets of American society. We will discuss the role of dentists in preventing misuse of prescription pain medications, how current insurance rules may promote misprescribing of these medications, and what resources are available to clinicians in identifying and addressing opiate addiction.
This course helps the learner recognize the severity of the epidemic of misuse of prescription and non-prescription opiates. Throughout the course, learners will begin to understand the dentist’s role in limiting and addressing this epidemic. Dentist are in a unique position to take action on behalf of their patients. The closeness of this relationship should enable the dentists to take action.
