UW dental school dean resigns

The dean of the University of Washington (UW) School of Dentistry has resigned with the school facing a $36 million budget deficit.

Joel Berg, DDS, resigned to focus on his teaching, research, and clinical practice, according to a statement from University Provost Jerry Baldasty.

Baldasty wrote that this deficit is a result of the university providing uncompensated and undercompensated care for Medicaid patients at its clinics, according to a Seattle Times article.

James Johnson, DDS, a professor and the chair of the dental school's department of endodontics, has been appointed interim dean, according to Baldasty.
